Community Based Monitoring Network

The Lake Winnipeg Community-Based Monitoring Network (LWCBMN) is a collaborative, long-term phosphorus monitoring program designed to identify localized phosphorus hotspots where action is required to improve Lake Winnipeg water quality.

Coordinated by LWF, LWCBMN mobilizes citizen volunteers and watershed partners to collect water samples across Manitoba, generating robust water-quality data that is useful to community practitioners, academic researchers, government scientists and policy-makers alike.

Focusing phosphorus-reduction efforts in persistent, recurring hotspots is critical to improving the health of Lake Winnipeg.

The Northeast Red Watershed District is lucky to assist with water sample collection at four sites within the District:

  • Brokenhead River near Beausejour (BHR_B)
  • Cooks Creek Diversion at Inlet (CC_DI)
  • Cooks Creek Downstream (DD_DS)
  • Devils Creek near Libeau (DC_LB)

To view the data collected at the sites within our District as well as across the rest of the network, please visit the LWCBMN DataStream page.

Red River Operation Clean Up

Red River Operation Clean Up celebrated its 5 year aniversay in 2024.   It is dedicated to improving water quality and protecting the Red River by removing debris, restoring riverbanks, and promoting community involvement in conservation efforts.

Red River Operation Clean Up focuses on clearing garbage and hazardous waste from the riverbanks, preventing pollutants from entering the water system. From discarded plastics and tires to larger debris like furniture and appliances, their clean-up efforts help maintain a healthier ecosystem for both wildlife and the surrounding communities. Through volunteer initiatives and public outreach, the organization fosters a sense of environmental responsibility and encourages local residents to take part in preserving the Red River for future generations.

Red River Operation Clean Up was founded by Robert Belanger, Councillor for the RM of St. Clements and a retired Conservation Officer of 35 years.
